Breed Specific Grooming Issues
At the park the other day a toy poodle was running loose and it came up to me (after a bit of my lunch, I’m sure!). At first glance it was a good looking dog, but upon closer inspection, the red trails under each eye were awful.
Tear stains are a common problem for some breeds of dogs, such as poodles.
The red stains are actually caused by a reddish yeast growing on the moist hair. For this reason, unless prescribed by a vet, avoid treating with Terramycin (an ophthalmic antibiotic), as it will not actually solve the problem.
For starters, try simply wiping down the area daily with distilled water.
Then, if the problem persists, consider changing their diet, as changing the PH of the dog’s body will make the production of that specific yeast stop. One half a tablet of TUMS once a day along with a half a cap of apple cider vinegar mixed with water may also help.
Hope this helps you keep your puppy’s face cleaned up!
